there are things in the pentagon you probably could deal with. i'm somebody who is a reaganite, i believe defense spending equates to capability. i don't want to shirk on weapon's capability or shirk on compensation for people putting their life on the line, but i have embraced what senator coburn wants to do, audit the pentagon. u.s. a very big bureaucracy. ask people who served on active duty in iraq, afghanistan, or on the home front. it's a big bureaucracy and a lot of times our military is successful in spite of the bureaucracy, but not because of it. i wouldn't say you can't look at defense, but if you think we'll balance the budget just by cutting defense, one, i don't think you can get there, but, two, we will be inviting danger from abroad, rather than protecting the people if we do that. >> you think we'll have a big fight over entitlements, social security, medicare? that will be coming up with the debt ceiling? part of the debt ceiling negotiations? >> i think we need to restructure some of the entitlements, get in the way that they are sustainable over the long term. whether it's via

are supportive of israel. i don't know what his management experience is regarding the pentagon, little if any. i think it's an incredibly controversial choice and it looks like the second term of barack obama is going to be an in your face term. >> foreign affairs correspondent jill dougherty is live from washington this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> opposition to hagel comes from the right and left. can you break down the issues? >> yeah. i think it has to really start with israel because the people who believe that he is not a supporter of israel, in fact, they would question his devotion to anything that would help israel. he, for instance, believes in talking to hamas. he also has come out against iran sanctions by the united states. and so that gets other people very worried about his position. he opposed the surge in afghanistan. and when you get into that issue, the gay issue, so called, about 14 years ago he made some comments about an ambassadorial nomination who as he put it was openly and aggressively gay. now that's, of course, a buzz saw of criticism. so it's not

it to you. >> why does the president want to down size the pentagon, the defense department? why does he want to do that? >> because obama has this ideological vision of america as a super power, too big for its britches and it's a power that's thrown itself around the world. he talked about it in his initial tour of the world, and that it does not sort of have the moral standing to be the great power it was, leading where it was, choosing where and when and he wants to cut it down to size. >> megyn: that was charles krauthammer making the argument to our own bill o'reilly, that president obama is forming his second term policy that america needs to down size its global presence or as he put it, mr. krauthammer, he thinks america, mr. obama does, is too big for its britches. and here is tucker carlson, a fox news contributor, and julie, and ray. what's the evidence of that? >> the evidence that the president sees the united states in world terms is everywhere you see it in the budget negotiations the reason the republicans are so thrown off. divided and disspirited. mostly they're confus

portnoy, who democrats were looking at undersecretary of defense, hoping she might move to the pentagon and overlooked for that position and susan rice now out of the running. the question, do we have enough bench of women. the cabinet positions, it's long hours, my intern went over to the white house and works 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and for a woman would children, how do we work them so women can do them. >> megyn: and talking about this on the air yesterday, i'm a relatively young mother and i would not do a job that would require 12 and 16 hours a day regularly. i'd never see my kid. women make that trade off and men, too, but women. and however, ben, look at the women in the cabinet. hillary clinton in her 60's and janet napolitano i think she's not married and you know, you can find women who could do the job who aren't necessarily young mothers, it's not like there's an absence of qualified available women out there. so why isn't he finding them? >> well, i think he's finding people he's comfortable with. and that's the problem when you make laws based on political gain. and the preside

pentagon official, rosa brooks. charles, let me start on this first hilda solis resigning. there's one fewer woman in the cabinet. was very interesting that the white house then announced that a woman, an african-american and an asian were staying. so, clearly this conversation is is being registered there. >> absolutely. i think that you would like to see as much diversity as possible. racial diversity, whatever else kind of diversity, in any cabinet, this one included. that said though, i think that you know, it's important to understand the entire context of what "the new york times" said in that story. one thing they said was that 46% of obama's appointees have been women and that's a very important issue. and that you know, he has had two big appointments, you know, the biggest thing a president can do is to nominate a supreme court justice. obama's had two shots. >> fair point. >> both have been women. and that and he appointed as his secretary of state, the woman, a woman and not just any woman, but what his chief rivals. would have done it again were it not for republican oppos

of pulling all troops out of afghanistan. now the pentagon is pushing back, saying it could jeopardize any negotiating power with the taliban. >> the position we take in showing that we are going to continue to complete this mission, the better the chances we have to ultimately achieve political reconciliation. >> the pentagon was only the beginning of the afghan president's visit to washington. >> our meeting, i believe, helped -- will help lay the ground work for president karzai's discussions tomorrow with president obama. >> sources say president karzai and his defense minister brought a wish list to the pentagon, drones, helicopters, and hardware to support their security forces. >> what we talked about yesterday was, you know, let's move beyond a wish list of equipment. >> the u.s. want assurances the terrorists won't set up troops in afghanistan after the troops leave. karzai agreed. >> be able to provide security to these people. >> but a recent pentagon reports that the afghan border patrol relies on the u.s. for even its most basic needs, food and water. it's rife with illiteracy

in a place far from home. give some thought to the possibility they'd like to have a pentagon chief who knows just what that's like. and that's "hardball for now," thanks for being with us. "politics nation" with al sharpton starts right now. >> thanks, chris. and thanks to you fr tuning in. tonight's lead show down over defense. today, the president officially nominated his choice for defense secretary. vietnam veteran and former gop senator chuck hagel of nebraska. already, republicans are signaling a major fight over his nomination. they apparently think the president should have the right to pick his own team, even though hagel has all the qualifications for the job. >> chuck hagel is the leader that our troops deserve. this day, chuck bears the scars and the shrapnel from battles he fought in our name. chuck hagel's leadership of our military would be historic. he would be the first person of enlisted rank to serve as secretary of defense. one of the few secretary who is have been wounded in war. and the first vietnam veteran to lead the department. in chuck hagel, our troops see a decor

's. how lives are going to change for men and women of the pentagon and how committed chuck hagel is. so she wants to know even though some of the gay activists and some of the interest groups human rights campaign have said that they accept his apology for what he said 14 years ago. >> well, so andrea, i would say that, first of all, i agree with chuck, and i think that what matters here is that the confirmation hearing, i think, may actually matter for chuck hagel. both in terms of the point chuck made, which is that if there is something sort of that we don't know that comes out, this is not a nominee who can probably with stand something like that. i think it's important that chuck schumer, tammy baldwin, normally if nominees fail, whether it's for supreme court or cabinet decisions, they fail in terms of confirmation because the sort of old party of the president pulls back. with harriet myers it was the uprising amongst conservatives that really doomed her. it seems to me john cornyn is not going to be for chuck hagel or john mccain. i doubt they're going to be for chuck hagel, but
